Sensational Sushi – How To

Do you LOOOVE sushi? Have you ever tried sushi?

The three of us have come to have a sincere appreciation for the culinary wonders of fish, seaweed, and rice blended together to create this deliciously scrumptious thing we call sushi.

Living in the residence halls at the University of Utah, there are always programs being put on to bring residents together and build community.  One of our friends from Japan wanted to teach everyone on the floor how to make and roll your own sushi!

It was surprisingly delicious and quite simple!


Gather ingredients and supplies.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Rice
  • Rice Vinegar & Sugar or Sushi Vinegar
  • Seaweed Paper
  • Seaweed Paper

  • Sesame seeds
  • Your preference of sushi insides:
  • Vegetables – carrots, cucumbers, avocado, etc.
  • Fish – tuna, imitation crab meat, any fish preference
  • Cream cheese
  • Dipping Sauces:
  • Soy sauce
  • Teriyaki sauce
  • Sauces

Cook the rice

If you need simple instructions, I learned here.

  • I use 2 cups of water to every 1 cup of rice for most rices
  • Boil water, add a little salt on high heat
  • Add rice and let boil again
  • Once boiling reduce heat to medium, and cover allowing steam to escape
  • Once craters appear in the rice, reduce heat to low and completely cover
  • Let cook usually 15-20 minutes depending.
  • Let cool so that it will be usable.


Prepare the rice.  Mix your rice vinegar with a little sugar and mix into the warm rice or use sushi vinegar.  Do it to taste and you will be fine.


Prepare ingredients to be rolled in the sushi.  Slice long, thin strips of everything such as your carrots, cucumbers, cream cheese, etc.


Cover sushi mats with saran wrap just to make everything easier and cleaner 😀


Prepare your roll.

  • Place seaweed paper (rough side up) on the mat.
  • Spread and pat rice over the seaweed paper.  Leave about 1/2 – 3/4 inch of the paper rice free on one side. (this will make it easier to roll)
  • Line ‘insides’ (veges., fish, cream cheese) on the middle of the rice (put what you want, but don’t pile too high, because it will be harder to roll)
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds lightly over rice

Roll the roll! (perhaps more succinct instructions here)

  • See the pictures.  (this is hard to explain)
  • Take the edge of the seaweed (the one with rice all the way up to the top) and roll it over itself very carefully to the middle of the square. Press hard.
  • Repeat to the other side – the free seaweed edge you will be able to squeeze over to itself. Squeeze.
  • Cut your sushi into pieces!

Enjoy your sushi! Eat it by itself, dip it in your sauces, or compliment a meal with your HOME-MADE sushi!!!!




Where can you find sushi materials and ingredients?

Most of the ingredients just came from our local grocery store (even the Nori (seaweed paper)).  However, for the sushi mats just visit most/any of your local Asian Markets.
