First Loaf of Bread! Homemade White Bread

I have been wanting to have loaf pans for such a loooong time!  My banana breads have been in square pans, which the taste is there, but it is so nice to slice a loaf!

I finally bought myself two at TJ Maxx Homegoods just a week ago.  And I have started to get good use of of them! To start, I made two loaves of delicious homemade white bread.  I haven’t really enjoyed a loaf of bread for awhile (other than French and sourdough loaves) and couldn’t wait to test out recipes.  I adapted this one – found at justapinch.com. A simple recipe producing a delicious result!

Homemade White Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 6 tsp yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 9-10 cups flour
  • 5 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp oil (vegetable, canola, olive)

Directions

  • Mix together sugar, yeast, and warm water – stir and let sit for 10 minutes
  • Mix in the salt and 1/2 of the flour to the yeast solution.  Add remaining flour until the dough pulls from the sides.  (I used my brand new KitchenAid from the wedding!!! (Thanks Erick, Wendy, and Farah!!!)
  •  Drizzle the oil over the ball of dough and knead for 1-2 minutes.
  • Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise, ~45 minutes
  • Remove dough from ball, knead slightly, and cut the dough into two pieces.
  • Place loaves into buttered loaf pans. (This being my first time making bread, I am knew to bread shaping techniques, where you roll out the dough, roll it up and seal the seam; will try this next time!)
  • Cover, and let the dough rise another 45 minutes.
  • In a 350 degree oven, cook the loaves for 30 minutes.  The tops should sound hollow when tapped and should be golden in color.
  • ENJOY! Slather butter and jam on the bread or use for sandwiches! Yum!

I learned a neat time saving trick from this website about freezing bread to bake later. For freezing – follow directions through placing the dough in the loaf pans.  Place in the freezer for ~8 hours.  Remove the dough from the pan and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap.  Label a plastic freezer bag and freeze up to 6 months.  This quote is right from the website: “When you’re ready to use it, unwrap it and put it in an oiled loaf pan directly from the freezer.  Cover with oiled plastic wrap and a towel and put in a warm place for about 3-4 hours.  The dough will thaw and rise at this time.  After that, follow the instructions for baking!”
